Public forum on the status of electronic equipment in Montreal

A collaboration between articule and the Artifact Institute, this interdisciplinary event will explore perspectives on the consumption, use, disposal, repair, re-use and obsolescence of electronic equipment. The forum will consider how the Montreal community is responding to the ever-increasing volume of electronic equipment that is perceived as obsolete, valueless or disposable, and engage the wider contexts of these issues.

TENDERNESS
Bizarre loop sampling wizardry, cracked electronics and sexy sax swoons, Toronto’s Chrissy Reichert has become TENDERNESS and manages to redefine any conceivable notions of contemporary Rn’B. Not to be missed, because true originality comes in small doses.

DRAINOLITH

Drainolith is the multi-throned oscillating 8-bit transmigration of Pyshic Handshake recording artist and Montreal-native Alex Moskos (ex-guitarist for now defunct AIDS Wolf). Diving deep into polyrhythmic hood jams and clamouring solos of synthetic marvel, Drainolith hams heavy, agnostic experimentalism into a creative vehicle the world is not ready to digest.

ENERGETIC ACTION
Edmonton, Alberta is home to many improbable entities, and Energetic Action’s revisionist goth-punk paradigm is no exception. Straddling the unknown line between the Pop Group and This Heat, their impossible rhythms and extravagant performances wrap an undisturbed nascency into music hardened by generations of nuclear waste. A certified western anomaly.

Lethe (Kiyoharu Kuwayama)
Lethe is the nom de plume of Japanese sound specialist Kuwayama Kiyoharu, whose long running Catastrophe Point series and fruitful collaborative albums (alongside Kapotte Muziek and Jonathan Coleclough to name two) have piqued my interest over the last couple of years. The majority of Lethe albums – if not all of them – were recorded in emptied or abandoned architectural spaces, such as warehouses and airplane hangars, where by a variety of ephemera was usually agitated, bowed, scraped, rustled or in some way, shape or form manipulated to create a sound that resonated within the vast walls of Kiyoharu’s chosen infrastructure. The results that Lethe achieves after carefully overdubbing his compositions are often a potent crossbreeding of Musique Concrète, Acousmatic, and Impressionistic musical sensibility.

Steve Bates
Steve Bates is an artist and musician, raised in Winnipeg and now living in Montréal. Coming from a back ground in the noisier side of music, radio art eventually lead to installation projects, both gallery and publicly sited. The sonic is always the starting point for his projects which are then manifested as evocations of communication networks and systems, or expressions of spatial and temporal experience.

Steve Bates frequently uses sound material that is site-specific in an attempt to uncover place and how the sonic effects our experience of site. Time is measured, stretched, pulled at, ignored, and extended. Bates holds an MFA from Concordia University where he was awarded the inaugural Claudine and Stephen Bronfman Fellowship in Contemporary Art. Current projects include ongoing collaborations with Douglas Moffat as Field Sound, including Okta, a multi-channel, permanent, outdoor sound installation commissioned by the City of Toronto, Lanterner, a music duo with Marc-Alexandre Reinhardt, and solo exhibitions. Bates continues to release music, both solo and collaboratively. His work has been exhibited in Canada, the United States and Europe.
