Magic Weapon

January 1st, 2010
It’s been awhile since I’ve added anything of substance to VVN. I took a lot of time off from Magic Weapon since Residue Hymns to try new things before I started writing songs again. Since late November I’ve been recording a record at Digital Bird Studios with Martin Horn (Parlovr, Cotton Mouth, Nightwood). It’s a lot different than anything I’ve ever worked on before. Thanks to those of you who purchased a copy of Residue Hymns with Villa Villa Nola. To be frank, the last time I listened to that EP I cringed a lot. I think there was definitely some rushing being done on my part to try and get it done as quick as I could without paying attention to many things (namely vocals) but I guess it’s an honest representation of Matt Shane and my abilities at the time.
The new record is mostly me doing all the instrumentation (Nathan Gage of Shapes and Sizes/Elfin Saddle plays Contrabass on a song) and it’s more of a lushed out vibe than anything I’ve recorded. I have this picture I took of a Yayoi Kusama installation that I want to use for the cover. I hope to have more recordings up here one day.
Happy New Year
